Kybella Fat Dissolving in Newport Beach

Diet and exercise reduce overall body fat. They do not choose where it comes from. Kybella does — permanently eliminating fat cells in the specific pockets that stubbornly resist everything else.

Kybella is deoxycholic acid — a synthetic form of a substance the body naturally produces to break down dietary fat. When injected directly into a fat deposit, it destroys the membrane of fat cells in that area. The destroyed cells are cleared by the body over the following weeks and do not regenerate. The result is permanent reduction of fat in the treated area.

At Plump Medical Spa in Newport Beach, Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD uses Kybella for both facial fat reduction — the submental area, jowls, and buccal fat — and for body fat pockets including the back of the arms, bra bulge, and lower abdominal fat. The approach is customized to each patient’s specific concern, anatomy, and how the treated area relates to the surrounding structures.

Kybella results are permanent — but swelling is significant. Most patients experience substantial swelling for 2 to 4 weeks after each session. This is not a treatment for patients who need to look their best immediately. The fat reduction that results once swelling resolves is permanent — those fat cells do not return.

Treatment areas

Kybella is FDA-approved for submental fat (under the chin) and is used off-label for other focal fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. At Plump, Dr. Mortazavi treats all of the following areas.

Face — FDA Approved
Double Chin (Submental Fat)
The most common Kybella treatment. Eliminates the fat pad beneath the chin that creates the appearance of a double chin, improving the jaw-to-neck profile significantly.
Face — Off-Label
Jowls & Lower Face Fat
Focal fat deposits along the jawline and jowl area that soften jaw definition. Kybella can reduce this fat to improve the sharpness of the lower face profile.
Body — Off-Label
Back of Arms (Tricep Area)
The posterior arm fat that persists regardless of exercise. A common concern for patients who are otherwise lean but carry localized fat in this area.
Body — Off-Label
Bra Bulge (Axillary Roll)
The fatty tissue that pushes above or around the bra line at the sides. One of the most requested body areas and one of the least commonly treated — Kybella addresses it effectively.
Body — Off-Label
Lower Abdominal Fat
Stubborn fat below the navel that persists despite diet and exercise — particularly common after pregnancy or significant weight changes.
Face — Off-Label
Buccal Fat
Fullness in the cheeks from buccal fat deposits. Kybella can subtly reduce this for a more defined facial contour without the risks of surgical buccal fat removal.

How Kybella works

Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that the body uses to emulsify and absorb dietary fat in the gut. When injected into a subcutaneous fat deposit, it disrupts the cell membrane of fat cells — causing them to rupture and release their contents. The debris is cleared by macrophages over the following weeks through the body’s normal inflammatory response. The fat cells that are destroyed do not regenerate.

This is what makes Kybella different from treatments that temporarily reduce fat by freezing or heating it — the cell destruction from deoxycholic acid is permanent. The treated fat does not return. New fat can accumulate in the area if the patient gains significant weight, but the specific cells that were destroyed are gone.

Who responds well

Focal fat with good skin tone

Patients with a discrete, localized fat deposit and reasonable skin elasticity. The fat is reduced and the skin contracts over the treated area. Patients with significant skin laxity in addition to fat may find the result less satisfying — skin tightening treatments may be needed alongside or instead.

Who should consider alternatives

Significant laxity or large volumes

Patients with significant skin laxity, very large fat deposits, or concerns that are primarily skin-related rather than fat-related. For larger volumes of fat, liposuction may produce a more dramatic result. Dr. Mortazavi assesses this honestly at consultation.

What to expect

Consultation

Dr. Mortazavi evaluates the fat deposit, assesses skin laxity in the treated area, and determines whether Kybella is the appropriate treatment or whether another approach — RF microneedling for skin tightening, Sculptra for volume and collagen, or referral for liposuction — would better serve the patient’s concern. He also discusses how many sessions are realistically needed and what the expected result will look like.

Treatment

A topical numbing agent is applied before treatment. Kybella is injected in a grid pattern across the treatment area using a fine needle — the number of injections varies by the size of the area being treated. The procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes. The injection itself causes a burning sensation that resolves within minutes.

Recovery — swelling is significant and expected

Swelling after Kybella is substantial — significantly more than most injectable treatments. For submental treatment, patients should expect the under-chin area to swell noticeably for 2 to 4 weeks. Numbness, tenderness, and firmness in the treated area are normal throughout this period. Most patients look worse before they look better. This is the inflammatory process at work and is entirely expected. Dr. Mortazavi prepares every patient for this clearly at consultation.

Sessions and timeline

Most patients need 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for optimal reduction. Some patients with smaller fat deposits see satisfying results after 1 to 2 sessions. Results become visible as swelling resolves — typically at 4 to 6 weeks after each session. Final results from a full treatment course are assessed at 3 months after the last session.

Kybella is one of the few treatments that produces permanent fat reduction without surgery — but patient selection and expectation-setting matter enormously. The swelling is significant and the timeline is long. Patients who understand this and commit to the process get results that last. Dr. Mortazavi uses it for both facial and body fat pockets and customizes the approach based on each patient’s anatomy and goals. All treatments performed personally.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kybella and how does it work?

Kybella is deoxycholic acid — a substance that destroys fat cell membranes when injected into a fat deposit. The fat cells rupture, release their contents, and are cleared by the body over several weeks. Because the fat cells themselves are destroyed, they do not regenerate. The fat reduction from Kybella is permanent in the treated area.

Is Kybella permanent?

Yes — the fat cells destroyed by Kybella do not regenerate. The reduction is permanent. However, new fat can accumulate in the treated area if the patient gains significant weight, since the body can create new fat cells under those conditions. Patients who maintain a stable weight after Kybella treatment can expect their results to last indefinitely.

What areas can Kybella treat beyond the double chin?

At Plump, Kybella is used for submental fat (double chin), jowl and lower face fat, the back of the arms (tricep area), bra bulge (axillary roll), lower abdominal fat, and buccal fat. Use beyond the submental area is off-label but clinically well-established and widely practiced by experienced injectors.

How much swelling should I expect?

Significant swelling is expected and normal — particularly for submental treatment where the area may appear noticeably swollen for 2 to 4 weeks after each session. Numbness, tenderness, and firmness are also normal. This is the inflammatory process clearing the destroyed fat cells. Patients should plan their social calendar accordingly and not judge results until swelling has fully resolved.

How many Kybella sessions do I need?

Most patients need 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Patients with smaller, more discrete fat deposits may see satisfying results after 1 to 2 sessions. The number of sessions depends on the size of the fat deposit and how aggressively the patient wants to reduce it. Dr. Mortazavi outlines the expected number of sessions at consultation.

Can Kybella be combined with other treatments?

Yes — and it often produces a better result when combined. For submental fat, masseter Botox can slim the lower face simultaneously. Jawline filler can sharpen the jaw definition that emerges as the submental fat reduces. For body areas, Sculptra or RF microneedling can address skin laxity that becomes more visible after fat reduction. Dr. Mortazavi coordinates the full lower face or body treatment plan at consultation.

How much does Kybella cost at Plump?

Kybella at Plump Medical Spa in Newport Beach is priced per vial. Most patients need 2 to 4 vials per session depending on the size of the treatment area. The number of sessions and total vials needed is discussed at consultation after Dr. Mortazavi assesses the specific area and concern.
