Dermal Fillers in Newport Beach
Good filler is invisible. Not because nothing changed — but because what changed looks entirely like you. The goal at Plump is never more. It is better.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers restore volume, define structure, and soften lines by placing a gel substance beneath the skin that integrates with surrounding tissue. Unlike neurotoxins, which relax muscles, fillers work by physically occupying space — adding or restoring volume where it has been lost, or placing structure where it was never quite right.
At Plump Medical Spa in Newport Beach, Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD performs every filler injection personally. Before any product is recommended, he conducts a full facial assessment — evaluating structure, proportions, and balance across the face as a whole. The goal is a result that looks cohesive and natural, not a series of isolated area treatments that don’t relate to one another.
Doctor-only filler injections. Every filler treatment at Plump is performed personally by Dr. Mortazavi, MD. No nurses, no assistants, no delegation. Filler placed incorrectly carries real consequences — vascular complications, migration, and unnatural results. The physician who assesses you performs the treatment.
The brands we use
Dr. Mortazavi works primarily with three HA filler families, each with specific products suited to different treatment areas and depths of placement.
Versatile, smooth gel
The Juvederm family includes products ranging from soft lip fillers to firm structural products for cheeks and jawline. Known for smooth integration and natural movement. Vycross technology cross-linking provides longer duration in deeper tissue planes.
Precise, cohesive gel
The Restylane family offers a range of products with varying particle sizes and lift capacities. Particularly versatile for under-eye treatment, lip definition, and areas requiring precise placement in superficial tissue planes.
Dynamic, resilient gel
RHA (Resilient Hyaluronic Acid) fillers are designed to move with facial dynamics rather than resist them. Particularly well-suited for areas of significant movement — the perioral region, nasolabial folds, and patients who want natural movement preserved alongside volume.
The choice of product for each patient and area is determined at consultation based on the specific result needed, the depth of placement, and how the area moves. Dr. Mortazavi selects the most appropriate product for each case rather than defaulting to a single brand.
Dr. Mortazavi’s facial assessment approach
Most filler consultations at other practices begin with the patient pointing to a concern — "I want bigger lips" or "I want my cheeks filled" — and the provider treating that area in isolation. At Plump, the consultation begins differently.
Dr. Mortazavi assesses the face as a whole before recommending any specific treatment. This matters because the face is a system of proportions, not a collection of independent areas. Volume placed in one region affects how adjacent regions look. A cheek treated without considering the under-eye or midface can look unnatural. Lip filler placed without considering the surrounding perioral proportions can produce an imbalanced result even if the lips themselves look fine in isolation.
Facial structure evaluation
Bone structure, soft tissue distribution, and overall facial shape are assessed to understand the patient’s underlying anatomy. This informs which areas would benefit most from volume or structure and which should be left alone.
Proportional balance assessment
The relationships between facial thirds, the midface, lower face, and lateral proportions are evaluated. Imbalances — a recessed chin relative to the lips, for example, or underprojected cheeks relative to a prominent jaw — inform the treatment plan and prioritization of areas.
Volume loss mapping
Areas of volume deflation — temples, cheeks, under-eyes, perioral region — are identified and assessed for severity. Volume loss often drives concerns that patients attribute to other causes, and addressing the loss rather than the downstream effect produces a more natural and longer-lasting result.
Existing filler assessment
For patients who have had filler elsewhere, Dr. Mortazavi evaluates what is present before recommending additional treatment. Layering filler over existing product without understanding what’s there first is a common source of unnatural results and complications. Ultrasound-guided filler assessment is available when needed.

Filler safety — what patients should know
Hyaluronic acid fillers are among the most widely performed aesthetic treatments in the world and have an excellent safety profile when placed correctly. The risks that do exist — vascular occlusion, migration, unnatural results — are almost always related to technique, placement depth, and the injector’s understanding of facial anatomy.
Anatomy knowledge and precision
Understanding where the vascular structures run in each region of the face, injecting at the correct tissue plane, using the appropriate product for each area, and aspirating before injection in high-risk zones. These are not optional precautions — they are the standard Dr. Mortazavi applies to every case.
Hyaluronidase availability
All HA fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed. Dr. Mortazavi offers ultrasound-guided filler dissolving for patients who want precise, safe reversal of existing filler — whether placed at Plump or elsewhere.
What to expect
Consultation
Dr. Mortazavi conducts a full facial assessment before recommending any filler treatment. He will discuss what he sees, what he recommends, and why — and give you a clear picture of what the treatment can realistically achieve. If he does not think a requested treatment is in your best interest, he will say so directly.
Treatment
Filler is injected using a fine needle or blunt cannula depending on the area and technique required. Topical numbing is applied before treatment for comfort. Most filler products also contain lidocaine, which further reduces discomfort during injection. Treatment time varies by area from 15 to 45 minutes.
After treatment
Mild swelling and occasional bruising are normal and typically resolve within 3 to 5 days. Final results are visible at 2 weeks after initial swelling has fully subsided. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and significant heat exposure for 24 hours after treatment.
Duration
HA filler duration varies significantly by area, product, and patient metabolism. Lips typically last 6 to 9 months. Cheeks and structural areas last 12 to 18 months. Under-eye filler can last 12 months or longer. Dr. Mortazavi discusses realistic duration expectations for each area at consultation.
Filler placed by a physician who understands facial anatomy as a system — not just a collection of areas — looks different from filler placed in isolation. Dr. Mortazavi assesses the full face before recommending any treatment and approaches every case with the same principle: less is more, and the result should look like you at your best, not like something was done. Every injection performed personally.
Frequently asked questions
What is hyaluronic acid filler?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body that retains water and maintains tissue hydration and volume. HA fillers are a gel form of this substance, cross-linked to maintain its structure after injection. They integrate with surrounding tissue, add or restore volume, and are gradually broken down by the body over months. All HA fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed.
What is the difference between Juvederm, Restylane, and RHA?
All three are HA fillers but they differ in their manufacturing process, gel consistency, and behavior in tissue. Juvederm products use Vycross technology and tend to integrate smoothly with a longer duration in deeper planes. Restylane products offer precise placement in superficial planes and are particularly versatile for delicate areas like the under-eyes. RHA fillers are designed to move with facial dynamics, making them well-suited for areas of significant expression. Dr. Mortazavi selects the most appropriate product based on the area, depth of placement, and desired result.
How long does filler last?
Duration varies by area, product, and individual metabolism. As a general guide: lips 6 to 9 months, cheeks and structural areas 12 to 18 months, under-eyes 12 months or longer. Patients who metabolize filler faster — often those who exercise heavily or have high metabolic rates — may find results wear off at the shorter end of these ranges.
Can filler look natural?
Yes — when placed correctly and conservatively. The overfilled, unnatural appearance associated with filler is a technique and philosophy problem, not an inherent property of the product. Dr. Mortazavi’s approach is built on placing less than the maximum and allowing the face to guide what is needed, rather than filling to volume targets. Results should look like the patient rested, refreshed, and at their best — not like something was injected.
Is filler safe?
HA filler has an excellent safety profile when placed by an experienced injector with strong anatomical knowledge. The most serious risk — vascular occlusion, where filler enters or compresses a blood vessel — is rare but documented. It is mitigated by knowing the vascular anatomy of each region, using appropriate technique, and having hyaluronidase immediately available. Dr. Mortazavi treats every injection site with awareness of these risks.
Can filler be dissolved if I don’t like the result?
Yes. All hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Dr. Mortazavi offers ultrasound-guided filler dissolving for patients who want precise, safe reversal — whether the filler was placed at Plump or at another practice. Ultrasound guidance allows the filler to be visualized before and during dissolving for a more targeted, complete result.
Do you treat patients who have had filler done elsewhere?
Yes. Many patients come to Plump after having filler placed at other practices — some happy with their results and looking for physician-performed maintenance, others looking to correct an outcome they weren’t satisfied with. For patients with existing filler, Dr. Mortazavi evaluates what is present before recommending additional treatment. Ultrasound imaging is available when needed to map existing product.
