Lip Filler in Newport Beach

The best lip filler result is the one nobody can identify. Not because nothing changed — but because what changed looks entirely like your lips, just better.

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid to add volume, refine shape, and enhance definition. But how it is placed — how much, where, at what depth, and in relation to the patient’s existing lip anatomy — determines whether the result looks natural or overdone. The product is almost never the limiting factor. The approach is.

At Plump Medical Spa in Newport Beach, Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD approaches every lip treatment based on what suits that patient’s anatomy. He does not apply a standard volume or technique to every patient. The lip shape, the ratio of upper to lower, the relationship between the lips and the surrounding perioral structures, and the patient’s own aesthetic goals all inform what is placed, where, and how much.

Natural enhancement means working with your anatomy, not against it. Lips that look overdone are almost always the result of too much volume or volume placed in the wrong location relative to the patient’s natural proportions. Dr. Mortazavi’s approach starts with less and builds from there — always with the goal of enhancement that looks like it was always there.

What lip filler can address

Volume

Fuller lips

Patients with naturally thin lips or lips that have lost volume with age. Filler adds fullness to both the body of the lip and the vermilion border — the edge that defines the lip shape. Volume is added gradually and conservatively to maintain natural proportions.

Definition

Sharper borders

Patients whose lips have lost definition at the vermilion border, creating a soft or blurred lip edge. Precise filler placement along the border sharpens and defines the lip shape without significantly adding to overall size.

Shape

Proportion and symmetry

Patients with asymmetry between the upper and lower lip, or between the left and right sides. Filler can correct these imbalances and reshape the Cupid’s bow for a more defined, balanced appearance.

Aging

Volume restoration

Lips naturally lose volume and definition with age. Filler restores what has been lost rather than creating something new — often the most natural-looking result because it returns the lip to its own previous proportions.

Dr. Mortazavi’s approach to lip treatment

The lip is one of the most unforgiving areas for filler — small errors in placement or volume are immediately visible in one of the most expressive parts of the face. Dr. Mortazavi’s approach to lips is built on anatomical precision and restraint.

Anatomy-first assessment

Before any filler is placed, Dr. Mortazavi evaluates the patient’s natural lip shape, the upper-to-lower lip ratio, the prominence of the Cupid’s bow, the relationship between the lips and the surrounding perioral area, and any existing filler. This assessment determines how much product is appropriate, where it should be placed, and what the realistic result will be for that patient’s specific anatomy.

Conservative first treatment

First-time lip filler patients at Plump are always treated conservatively. It is significantly easier to add more at a follow-up than to manage an overfilled result. Starting with less allows both the patient and Dr. Mortazavi to assess how the product settles in that patient’s lips before deciding whether additional volume is warranted.

Needle technique

Dr. Mortazavi uses needle technique for lip filler, allowing precise placement at specific points within the lip tissue. The lip is numbed with topical anaesthetic before treatment, and the filler products used contain lidocaine for additional comfort during injection. Most patients find the procedure very tolerable.

Product selection

Lip filler requires a soft, flexible product that moves naturally with lip expression. Dr. Mortazavi selects from the Juvederm, Restylane, and RHA ranges based on the patient’s goal — patients wanting subtle definition often respond well to a softer product, while those wanting more visible volume may benefit from a product with slightly more lift. The choice is made at consultation based on the individual assessment.

What to expect

Before treatment

Avoid blood thinners, alcohol, and anti-inflammatory medications for 48 hours before treatment to minimize bruising risk. Arrive with clean lips — no lip liner or plumping products.

During treatment

Topical numbing cream is applied and left for 10 to 15 minutes before injection. Filler is placed at specific points in and around the lip using a fine needle. The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes. Most patients experience mild discomfort at most.

Immediately after

Expect swelling — often significant in the first 24 to 48 hours. This is normal and does not reflect the final result. Cold compresses help. The lips will feel firmer than usual for the first few days as the product settles.

Final result

Swelling resolves over 5 to 7 days. Final results are visible at 2 weeks when the product has fully integrated and any residual swelling has resolved. This is when Dr. Mortazavi assesses whether any adjustment is needed.

Duration

Lip filler typically lasts 6 to 9 months. Patients who metabolize filler faster — often those who are very active or have high metabolic rates — may find results at the shorter end of this range. Patients who maintain regular treatment often find the results last progressively longer.

Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD — Plump Medical Spa, Newport Beach

The most common reason patients come to Plump for lip filler after having it done elsewhere is that the result didn’t look like them. Not necessarily overfilled — just not quite right. The difference is almost always in the assessment: whether the provider evaluated what that patient’s lips actually need before picking up a syringe. Dr. Mortazavi starts there, every time. All injections performed personally.

Frequently asked questions

Will lip filler look natural?

With the right approach, yes. Natural-looking lip filler comes from placing the right amount in the right locations for that patient’s anatomy — not from the product itself. Overdone lips are almost always the result of too much volume or volume placed without considering the patient’s natural proportions. Dr. Mortazavi’s philosophy is anatomy-first and conservative: the result should look like your lips, enhanced, not like something was injected.

How much filler do I need?

This depends entirely on your starting point and goal. Many first-time patients and those wanting subtle enhancement are well-served by a half syringe. Patients wanting more visible volume or those maintaining an established result typically use a full syringe. Dr. Mortazavi advises which is appropriate after assessing your lips at consultation — he will not recommend more than what your anatomy warrants.

How long does lip filler last?

Typically 6 to 9 months. Lips are one of the most active areas of the face and metabolize filler relatively quickly compared to structural areas like cheeks. Patients who are very physically active or have high metabolic rates may find results at the shorter end of this range.

Does lip filler hurt?

Topical numbing is applied before treatment and the filler itself contains lidocaine, which further reduces discomfort during injection. Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure or a slight pinch. The lips are more sensitive than other facial areas, but the numbing protocol makes the procedure very manageable for most patients.

How much swelling should I expect?

Swelling after lip filler is normal and can be significant in the first 24 to 48 hours — often more than patients expect. This does not reflect the final result. Cold compresses help reduce swelling. Most swelling resolves within 5 to 7 days, with final results visible at 2 weeks.

Can lip filler be dissolved if I don’t like it?

Yes. All hyaluronic acid lip fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Dr. Mortazavi offers ultrasound-guided filler dissolving for patients who want precise reversal. If you are unhappy with a result from Plump or from another practice, a consultation is the right first step.

Can I combine lip filler with a lip flip?

Yes — and many patients benefit from both. The lip flip uses botulinum toxin to evert the upper lip outward, enhancing the show and definition of the lip without adding volume. Combined with filler, it creates a more defined, everted result than either treatment achieves alone. Dr. Mortazavi coordinates both in the same appointment when indicated.
