Why colour decides everything

Ink is only fragmented if it absorbs the wavelength being fired at it. Colour is what a pigment reflects — green ink looks green because it reflects green light and absorbs red.

So treating green requires a wavelength in the red range. Treating red requires green. Black absorbs everything, which is why it's straightforward and why almost any device clears it.

Yellow reflects most of the visible spectrum. There's very little left for a laser to act on, which is why yellow ink frequently barely moves regardless of how many sessions you do.

Worth Understanding Before You Start
A multicoloured tattoo doesn't clear evenly. It clears in the order the colours allow.

Black and red go first. Green and light blue lag. What that means in practice is a stage — usually around sessions four to eight — where the tattoo looks patchy rather than faded. The easy colours have gone and the difficult ones are still there.

That's normal and expected. It's also the point where patients who weren't told about it get discouraged and stop.

Knowing which colours are in your tattoo before starting means knowing roughly what that middle stage will look like — and whether full clearance is realistic or whether significant fading is the honest goal.

The Risk Nobody Mentions
Cosmetic tattoo and white ink can turn black in a single pulse.

Many cosmetic pigments — microbladed brows, permanent lip liner, powder brows — contain iron oxide. White inks frequently contain titanium dioxide. Both can undergo chemical reduction when hit with laser energy, converting to a darker compound.

The result is immediate and visible: a light brown brow turning grey or black. It's called paradoxical darkening, and it happens during the treatment, not weeks later.

It can often be treated further and cleared — but the intermediate appearance is considerably worse than what you started with, and that phase can last months.

A test spot is performed first on any cosmetic tattoo or white ink, in an inconspicuous area, and assessed before anything else is done. Any practice treating a brow tattoo without testing is taking a risk on your face rather than their own.

Location matters more than people expect. Tattoos on the chest and back clear faster than those on the hands, feet, and lower legs — circulation and lymphatic drainage are better closer to the trunk, and clearance is an immune process.

If You're Planning a Cover-Up

Say so at the first consultation, because it changes the plan substantially.

Fading requires far fewer sessions than removal. The goal is reducing ink density enough for an artist to work over — not clearing it. That's often three or four sessions rather than ten.

Patients who don't mention it end up paying for full removal they never needed.

Why the Six-to-Eight Week Gap

The laser doesn't remove ink. It fragments it — breaking particles small enough for immune cells to carry away through the lymphatic system.

That clearance takes weeks, and it's where the actual fading happens. Your tattoo lightens between sessions, not during them.

Treating again too soon means firing at ink that's already fragmented and on its way out. It adds inflammation without adding benefit, and it raises the risk of scarring and pigment change.

The interval is doing real work. A practice offering three-week intervals is selling more sessions, not faster results.

On Skin Tone

1064nm is the safe wavelength in deeper skin — absorbed poorly by melanin, so it reaches black ink without heating the surrounding epidermis. Black tattoos in Fitzpatrick IV to VI are treated routinely.

The shorter wavelengths needed for red, orange, and green carry more melanin absorption and therefore more pigmentation risk. That's a real constraint, and it means a multicoloured tattoo in deeper skin is treated more conservatively and over a longer course.

The consultation that matters most here is the first one, and it's mostly about colour. Someone with a black armband is looking at a straightforward course. Someone with a colourful sleeve including green and yellow is looking at something considerably longer, and possibly at fading rather than clearance. Both are worth doing — but they're different commitments, and it's not fair to let someone find that out at session six.
