SkinVive for Lips & Skin Booster in Newport Beach

Most fillers add volume. SkinVive does something different — it hydrates from within. Used in the lips, the result isn't bigger lips. It's softer, smoother, better-hydrated ones.

Quick Answer

SkinVive lip hydration uses highly diluted hyaluronic acid injected into the lip tissue itself to improve moisture, softness, and texture — without adding volume or changing lip size. It's the treatment for dry, chapped, or finely lined lips, not for patients who want fuller lips. Results develop over 2–4 weeks and last roughly 6 months. At Plump Medical Spa in Newport Beach, every treatment is performed personally by Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD.

SkinVive by Juvederm is an intradermal skin booster — a highly diluted hyaluronic acid injected into the superficial layers of the skin rather than beneath it. Unlike traditional fillers that add structural volume, SkinVive improves the tissue itself: deeply hydrating, softening fine lines, and creating a smoother, more radiant surface from the inside out.

At Plump Medical Spa in Newport Beach, Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD performs SkinVive across the face and, increasingly, in the lips — where the hydration effect addresses a complaint that lip filler cannot fix.

SkinVive for Lips — Lip Hydration Without Volume

The most common reason patients ask about lip hydration is that their lips feel and look chronically dry — and no balm, mask, or scrub has changed it. That's because topical products sit on the surface of the lip. They don't reach the tissue where the dryness originates.

SkinVive lip hydration works differently. A highly diluted hyaluronic acid is placed intradermally, into the lip tissue itself, using a series of very small injections. Hyaluronic acid binds water, so hydration is delivered within the tissue rather than applied on top of it. Lips become softer, smoother, and better hydrated — without becoming larger.

This is not lip filler. SkinVive will not increase lip size, project the lips forward, or change lip shape. If your goal is fuller lips, you need lip filler. If your goal is lips that look and feel healthier — hydrated, soft, less lined — SkinVive is the treatment that does that.

What lip hydration addresses well

Chronically dry or chapped lips that don't respond to topical products. Fine vertical lip lines — the ones that appear at rest and worsen with pursing. Lips that have lost softness and suppleness with age. Lip texture that looks dull or crepey rather than smooth. Patients who already have lip filler but still feel their lips look dry or finely lined on the surface.

What it won't address

Thin lips a patient wants made fuller. Asymmetry requiring structural correction. Loss of definition at the vermillion border. Downturned corners. All of these are volume and structure problems, and they need filler or neurotoxin rather than hydration.

On Off-Label Use

SkinVive by Juvederm is FDA-approved for improving skin smoothness of the cheeks in adults. Use in the lips — along with the perioral area, forehead, under-eyes, and neck — is off-label. Off-label use of an FDA-approved product is legal, common in aesthetic medicine, and consistent with how skin boosters are used internationally. Dr. Mortazavi discusses this with every patient before treating, so you know exactly what is being used and where.

Lip Hydration vs. Lip Filler

These are frequently confused, and the distinction determines whether a patient ends up happy or disappointed.

SkinVive Lip Hydration
Lip Filler
Goal
Healthier-looking lips
Fuller, more defined lips
Product
Highly diluted, non-cross-linked HA
Thicker, cross-linked HA gel
Placement
Intradermal — into the lip tissue
Submucosal — beneath the lip tissue
Changes size?
No
Yes — that's the point
Best for
Dryness, fine lines, texture, softness
Volume, shape, definition, asymmetry
Visible immediately?
Partially — full result at 2–4 weeks
Yes, though swelling obscures it initially
Duration
~6 months
6–12 months
Can be combined?
Yes — filler for structure, SkinVive for tissue quality on top of it

A meaningful number of patients who come in asking for more lip filler actually want lip hydration. They've had filler, they have adequate volume, and what's bothering them is surface quality — dryness and fine lines that more volume won't fix and may make more obvious. Distinguishing between the two at consultation is the difference between a good outcome and a patient who keeps adding product chasing a result it can't deliver.

SkinVive Beyond the Lips

The same principle applies across the face. SkinVive is used on the cheeks, forehead, perioral area, under-eyes, and neck — anywhere skin quality rather than volume is the concern.

SkinVive
HA Filler
What it does
Hydrates the dermis and improves skin quality from within
Adds structural volume beneath the skin
Placement
Intradermal — into the skin itself
Subdermal — beneath the skin
Result
Softer, more hydrated, luminous skin surface
Fuller, more projected or structured features
Best for
Skin dryness, dullness, fine surface lines, texture
Volume loss, structural definition, contouring
Duration
6 months
6–18 months depending on area

SkinVive and HA filler are frequently used together in the same session — structural filler for volume and definition, SkinVive for skin quality on top of that foundation. The combination produces a result that looks both lifted and luminous rather than simply filled.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Ideal candidates

Skin & lip quality concerns

Patients with dry, dull, or dehydrated skin or lips that don’t respond adequately to topical products. Patients noticing fine surface lines and loss of softness. Patients who feel their skin has lost its natural luminosity with age. Patients who already have structural filler but want better tissue quality on top of it.

Consider other treatments

Volume or structural concerns

Patients whose primary concern is thin lips, hollowing, sagging, or loss of facial definition. SkinVive will not address these — structural HA filler, Sculptra, or a combination is more appropriate. Dr. Mortazavi clarifies this distinction at consultation so patients are treated with what will actually help.

What to Expect

Consultation and treatment planning

Dr. Mortazavi assesses skin and lip quality, hydration level, and the specific concerns the patient wants addressed before determining the placement approach. The number of syringes depends on the areas treated and the degree of improvement needed.

Treatment

Topical numbing is applied first. SkinVive is administered using a fine needle in a series of small intradermal injections across the treatment area. The product is placed into the superficial dermis — not deep beneath the tissue — which is why placement precision matters. Treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes. Most patients find it very comfortable once numbing has taken effect. Lip treatment is more sensitive than facial areas and numbing is given additional time to work.

Immediately after

Small bumps at injection sites are normal and typically resolve within a few hours to a day. Mild redness is expected. In the lips, brief swelling is common and settles within 24 to 48 hours. Most patients return to normal activities immediately — though significant sun exposure, heat, and strenuous exercise are best avoided for 24 hours. Makeup and lip products can generally be resumed the following day.

Results and duration

Skin and lips feel immediately softer as the HA integrates with surrounding tissue. The full result — improved glow, smoother texture, softer fine lines — develops over 2 to 4 weeks. Results typically last 6 months, though the lips, being a high-movement, high-metabolism area, sometimes resolve slightly sooner. Most patients maintain with treatment every 4 to 6 months.

Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD — Plump Medical Spa, Newport Beach

A fair number of patients come in convinced they need more lip filler when what's actually bothering them is dryness and fine lines — and adding volume to that makes the surface texture more noticeable, not less. Lip hydration solves a different problem than lip filler does. Sorting out which one a patient actually needs is most of the consultation. Every injection here is performed by me personally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can SkinVive be used in the lips?

Yes. At Plump Medical Spa in Newport Beach, Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD performs SkinVive lip hydration using intradermal micro-injections placed into the lip tissue itself. This hydrates and softens the lips without adding structural volume. SkinVive is FDA-approved for improving skin smoothness of the cheeks, so lip use is off-label — a common and legal practice in aesthetic medicine, discussed with every patient before treatment.

What is lip hydration and how is it different from lip filler?

Lip hydration uses a highly diluted hyaluronic acid injected into the lip tissue to improve moisture, softness, and texture without changing lip size or shape. Lip filler uses a thicker, cross-linked hyaluronic acid placed to add volume and structure. Lip hydration makes lips look healthier; lip filler makes lips look bigger.

Will SkinVive make my lips bigger?

No. SkinVive is not a volumizing product. It will not increase lip size, project the lips forward, or change lip shape. Patients occasionally notice a very subtle plumping effect from improved hydration, but this is a skin-quality change rather than added volume. Patients wanting larger lips need lip filler.

How long does SkinVive lip hydration last?

Approximately 6 months. Because the lips are a highly mobile, high-metabolism area, some patients find lip results resolve slightly sooner than facial areas. Most patients maintain with treatment every 4 to 6 months.

Is SkinVive good for dry, chapped, or lined lips?

This is one of its best applications. Chronically dry lips, fine vertical lip lines, and lips that have lost softness with age respond well to intradermal hydration, because the treatment addresses moisture within the tissue rather than sitting on the surface the way a balm does.

Can SkinVive be combined with lip filler?

Yes, and the combination is common. Lip filler provides structure and volume; SkinVive improves the quality and hydration of the lip tissue itself. Patients who already have lip filler but feel their lips still look dry or lined are frequently good candidates for adding SkinVive.

What is SkinVive?

SkinVive by Juvederm is an intradermal hyaluronic acid skin booster — a highly diluted HA injected into the superficial layers of the skin to deeply hydrate the dermis, soften fine lines, and improve texture and glow. It is not a volumizing filler.

How is SkinVive different from regular filler?

Traditional HA fillers are injected beneath the skin to add volume and structural support. SkinVive is injected into the skin itself to hydrate it from within. The result is improved skin quality: softer texture, more luminous appearance, and softer fine lines. It does not lift, project, or add structural volume.

Is SkinVive FDA-approved?

Yes. SkinVive by Juvederm received FDA approval in 2023 for improving skin smoothness of the cheeks in adults, making it the first FDA-approved intradermal skin booster in the United States. Use in other areas including the lips, perioral region, forehead, under-eyes, and neck is off-label but consistent with how skin boosters are used internationally.

Who performs SkinVive at Plump Medical Spa?

Every SkinVive treatment is performed personally by Dr. Amir Mortazavi, MD. Injections are not delegated to nurses, physician assistants, or aestheticians.
